The Association for Teaching Black History in Kentucky partners with schools across the Commonwealth to provide engaging lessons, professional development, and programs that highlight the voices and contributions of all Kentuckians. If you’re an educator or administrator interested in hosting ATBHK at your school, we invite you to complete our School Visit Interest Form. Together, we can create meaningful learning experiences that enrich Kentucky’s classrooms and communities.

Our Mission
ATBHK has a mission; we work to ensure that the voices, stories, and historical experiences of Black Kentuckians are elevated and shared. We honor the work of Carter G. Woodson, the father of Black history, as we work to support educators in providing the most robust analysis of the social sciences for our students- and this must include Black history.
Our Strategies
(1) Collaborate with educators to provide the necessary support.
(2) Curate materials to supplement resources that educators currently have.
(3) Celebrate wonderful examples of teaching Kentucky’s rich Black history.
Our Resources
The ATBHK will provide resources for teachers, including workshops, a website with carefully curated instructional videos, links to Kentucky historical resources and sample lessons plans.

“There are some that will shy away from it, but there is no better time in American history to attack and address some of the things we have not done well in our curriculum. One of the things we must start doing is recognizing the contributions of Black students of Black people and the horrendous things that have happened under the words supremacy and racism in Kentucky, and when we do that, we will not repeat some of the things we’re working so hard not to,” said John Marshall, chief equity officer for JCPS.
