In July, the Association for Teaching Black History in Kentucky launched it’s Fellowship! The fellowship is a cohort of educators and professionals from all over the Bluegrass, looking to better equip themselves to teach Black History. The fellows will attend professional development sessions and create resources that teachers can utilize. We were fortunate enough to welcome:
- Dr. Eric Jackson
- Dr. David Childs
- Chaka Cummings, our ATBHK executive Director
Chaka Cummings will be our speaker for our sessions. During the sessions, fellows were introduced to a variety of sources, including LaGarrett Kings’ framework entitled “An Introduction to Black Studies”. Fellows were given a plethora of books and resources surrounding Black History that they can begin using to supplement their curriculums. The Association is thrilled to see the fruits that the cohort will produce!
The ATBHK would like to spend a moment to highlight some great resources! Below are the titles of some great books for learning about Black History in Kentucky. In this issue, we are highlighting some great resources for parents and elementary school teachers!
- “Lift Your Light a Little Higher” by Heather Henson
- “A is for Affrilachia” by Frank X Walker
- “A Journey in Color: The Art of Ellis Walker” by Jane Moore Waldrop
